Built starting in 1983, the Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica is the tallest cemetery in the world, according to the Guinness Book. Today, the site has more than 17,000 niches spread across 14 floors and, with a focus on offering a lighter experience, visitors will also find several shared spaces such as a kids’ area, restaurant, wake room, and chapel.
Nature
Covering 40,000 m², with 90% preserved Atlantic Forest, the Memorial includes an ecological reserve authorized by IBAMA. Visitors will find a grotto, a beautiful aviary with macaws, parrots, cockatiels, lovebirds, budgerigars, chickens, peacocks, pheasants, a freshwater turtle, as well as ponds with carp.
Vintage Vehicles Museum
The Memorial houses a vintage vehicles museum with 56 exhibits, including motorcycles, automobiles, and bicycles. The oldest one, a 1904 Rochet motorcycle, is the only one in the world with a 500 cc engine.
You will also see a replica of the first automobile manufactured with an internal combustion engine, the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. Among the vehicles on display are a 1923 Ford T, a 1980 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit II, and a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air.
King Pelé Mausoleum
King Pelé rests in a mausoleum on the first floor of the Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica. The space measures 200 m² and features two golden statues of the star athlete at the entrance. The sculptures welcome visitors and lead them into a corridor that simulates the entrance to a soccer field.
With walls covered in photos of key moments from the idol’s history, the passage leads to a room with synthetic grass carpeting, where the body of the legend rests.
Note: The Mausoleum is currently closed for maintenance. Please follow updates on the reopening date on the Memorial Necropolis Ecumenical website.
